Little Known Facts

We all love little bits of random info and that's what this page is for, little bits of random info from
Sailor moon! And if you know of any more, please share!
- According to the Japanese Wikipedia page on Codename Sailor V, the name was changed
to that to avoid legal issues with the Sailor Pens company as Sailor V was already a registered
trademark (uncertain if this is exactly the story but it is true that something about Sailor V was
changed because of that!).
- There is much more to Luna, Artemis, and Diana! In the manga it is revealed that they are from
the planet Mau. This was also the home of Sailor Mau and Sailor Tin Nyanko. The planet was
devastated during Sailor Galaxia's conquest of the galaxy. Here's the info:
In Act 41 of the manga, Sailor Moon's power causes her companions to revert to their truest forms.
The Sailor Senshi become princesses and the three cats are teleported to Sailor Moon's location,
where they take on human forms. Luna's shape is the same as she had acquired previously,
Artemis gets reverted to the form he had taken earlier in the arc to save Minako, while Diana is
shown this way for the first time.
The reason for their transformation is not discussed until Act 46, in which the three are attacked
by Sailor Tin Nyanko. She calls them traitors, using her power to change them once again into
humans and then chasing them, trying to kill them. When she introduces herself to Sailor Moon,
Luna realizes who she really is. She is a false Senshi from their original planet, Mau, which had
once been protected by Sailor Mau. Artemis called it a peace-loving world, but Tin Nyanko informs
him that after he and Luna "abandoned" it, its people were wiped out by Sailor Galaxia. At this
point, Diana, also in human form, arrives from the future and tries to intervene, but Tin Nyanko hits
all three of them with blasts from her bracelets and they shift to ordinary cats, unable to speak.
Later, as they care for the badly injured cats, Princess Kakyuu tells Usagi that the three of them
have powerful star seeds, as brilliant as Sailor Crystals. In Act 47, it is revealed that their inability
to speak is a result of injuries to the crescent moon symbols on the cats' foreheads and before
leaving to fight Galaxia, Usagi leaves them in the care of her mother. In the next Act, they are
brought to the River Lethe and killed by Sailor Lethe. Presumably they are reincarnated at the
end of the series with everyone else.
- In the Sailor Stars series you find out that Rei goes to a Catholic school. For some odd reason
her Grandfather wanted her to go there even though their Shinto.
- Mina's love life is the way it is because she is cursed. In the Sailor V manga, she meets Ace
Kaitou (the sort of Tuxedo Mask of her story). Sadly however it is revealed that he is actually
Danburite (the bad guy), who serves under the Shitennou.
In the Silver Millennium, he was Adonis, a lowly foot-soldier posted to Venus who was also good
at fortune telling. One day he saw Princess Venus and fell in love with her, but his love was
hopeless. In his final death scene against Sailor V, where he is killed half in self defense on her
part and half in suicide, he foretells that her love shall forever remain hopeless, dooming her and
at the same time leaving her path open to put her mission before romance without hesitation.
- In the wedding scene at the end of the Stars manga, Usagi says "I felt it. The feeling that a new
star will be born. Soon we will have our daughter." This, along with the scene right before which
shows Usagi and Mamoru waking up together, implies that Rini was conceived at age 16 before
they were officially married.
- Usagi was the only character to appear in all 200 episodes of the anime.
- Sailor Mercury was the only one to actually be killed by the DD (Doom 'n Gloom) Girls while
the rest were killed using kamikaze attacks.
- In the manga, the scouts tell Andrew who they really are. Lita's friend Asunama (the manga
version of Ken) also knows who the scouts are in the manga.
- Death is a common occurrence and each senshi dies at least twice in the series.
- The names we know in the North American version were not the first names given. We could
have known the inner scouts as any of the following: Serena - Victoria or Celeste or Darien, Amy
- Blue, Raye - Dana or Rae, Lita - Sara or Maggie, Mina - Kari or Monica or Alicia, Darien - Mark,
Tuxedo Mask - The Masked Tuxedo. Hear the names in this
promotional video.
- Chad and Greg never existed in the manga.
- Rini is 903 years old in the manga.
- Serena gets drunk twice in the series.
- Amy once beats Haruka in a senshi battle.
- DIC added 8 extra notes to Alan's flute song.
- In the manga, Hotaru's dad held a convention to show off his latest invention, which Hotaru
attended, and it blew up in everyone's face. Only he survived and in his torment over losing Hotaru,
he turned her into a half cyborg.
- In the episode "So You Want To Be A Superstar" in the North American dub, Sailor Moon
breaks the fourth wall and looks at the screen to say, "If you see Luna tell her that I could really
use her help."
- In the manga we discover exactly why Rei stays with her grandfather. Her mom died a few years
after she was born and she hated her father so much for neglecting his family (he's a lawyer) that
she decided to stay with her grandpa on her mom's side. An example of that neglect was that Rei
never actually saw her father, only the assistant he sends. She actually falls in love with him too.
- Lots of stuff in the show is labeled 10-BAN because of a joke. 10 in Japanese is juu, adding
BAN gets you Juuban, which is their school district.
- The Starlights aren't related and in the manga they were always women (think Haruka) but
don't tell their fans. The looking like men part was a ploy because they thought it would be easier
to attract the attention of women (ie. their princess) that way.
- The Three Lights are not brothers nor are they sisters. As they were all born in the same year.
- The Starlights first names are in fact all Kou. In Japan you say your last name before your
first name and in the manga they say their names as Seiya Kou, Yaten Kou, and Taiki Kou. Not
only that but on page 77 of the original print of the tankoubon manga #16, there is a panel that
shows school test results and it very clearly says "Mizuno, Ami" and "Taiki, Kou".
- Ami's mom and dad are divorced. One day her dad went to his studio in the woods (he is a
painter who does Japanese water colors) and later her mom got a divorce slip in the mail. However,
Ami gets a postcard from her dad every birthday.
- Phobos and Demos, Rei's crows, become human in Act 34 of the manga. We also learn that
they are from the planet Coronis and face a similar situation with Lead Crow that Luna and Artemis
face with Tin Nyanko. In the anime, while they can be seen, they don't play the same role.
- You can figure out the year each character was born in because the time in the Sailor Moon
world ran parallel to real time when the show first aired in Japan and continued to through the
whole series.
- Usagi's family, Hotaru's father, Mamoru, and Haruka are all incredibly wealthy by Japanese
standards. Usagi's family not only have their own house, but a very large one with two floors.
Mamoru drives imported cars and goes to a private university. Haruka has a helicopter, a motorbike,
and several cars. Hotaru lives in a mansion. It might not seem like much to Americans but most
Japanese people live in apartments the size of a "standard" American dorm room for twice or
triple the rent.
- Juuban (where all the girls live and play) is a real place in Japan. It's pretty much a 'rich' part
of town. The word "Juuban" translates to "Tenth Street." The coincides with the fact that many of
the characters are wealthy (see above). Naoko also moved to Juuban soon after Sailor Moon
made it big.
- Sailor Iron Mouse and Sailor Lead Crow's alter identities are puns. Iron Mouse goes as Chuuko
Nezu. Her first name Nezu is the pun, in Japanese Nezumi means 'mouse' or 'rat'. Lead Crow
posed as Karasuma Akane, Karasu means 'crow' in Japanese. 'Aka' in Akane means 'red' (she's
red colored). In Japanese, there is no distinction between the letters L and R also (yet another
pun). Along with this, in the manga, Tin Nyanko poses as a foreign exchange student named
Suzu Nyanko. Suzu means 'tin bell' in Japanese. In the anime she wears a bell around her neck.
- All the Senshi's last names are puns on their planets except for Minako's. Take for example
how you say Mars in Japanese 'Kasei' which literally means 'Fire Star.' Ka is also pronounced
Hi. Fire is the first Kanji in Kasei and also the first one in Hino. All of them work that way except
Aino Minako's. Ai means love and Kinsei means Gold Star. The reason Aino Minako doesn't fit
the puns and doesn't use the kanji for 'Kin' is because she was created before Naoko made the
other characters.
- Touma Yumi and Midorikawa Hikaru the seiyuu for Anne and Alan in Sailor Moon R, were also
the seiyuu for the SMR movie villains, the Kisenian Flower and Fiore.
- In the future as Neo-Queen Serenity, Usagi still doesn't write in kanji. Ami makes alot of
comments about that in Sailor Stars. Kanji is very important, kindergartners learning it.
- Hikawa Shrine does actually exist in Japan. However, they replaced the original 'hi' kanji on
the temple with the 'hi' for fire in the anime.
- There is also a Crown Game Center in Juuban as well, along with several other places used
in the manga and anime (check out the book Warriors of Legend
and see some examples here).
- Minako started wearing a red bow in her hair because a boy she liked told her she'd look nice
in it (in the Sailor V manga).
- The Senshi all have castles based on the names of the moons of their home planets. Uranus'
castle is called Miranda Castle, Neptune's is Triton Castle, Pluto's is Charon Castle, Venus' is
Magellan Castle.
- The manga describes Haruka as being both 'male and female.'
- Alan and Ann were the only villains (not including the movies) to not come from the manga.
They were created so the manga could catch up with the anime.
- Mizuno Ami is one of Japan's most liked anime characters.
- If you look really closely in Sailor Moon, you might be able to see the building of TV-Asahi.
That's the company that aired Sailor Moon.
- Naoko originally intended all the Sailor Senshi to wear different sailor suits and wear masks.
Sailor Moon was also going to have a gun and a cape (see pics here).
- Diana was originally going to be a fairy and Artemis was going to be Luna's twin (see above
pics). You can also learn many other interesting facts from the above pictures that may or may
not have made it into the manga. Example: Sailor Mercury's goggles were modeled after the
Terminator.
- The kanji for the "Juu" part of Juuban looks like a crossroad which is why the junior high school
is called "Crossroads" in the dub.
Unconfirmed Little Known Facts
This are things that came with the above but I am not so sure about them. Anyone know if their
true or not?
- Takeuchi Naoko is such a huge fan of mirrors than she decided to base the fourth series
(SMSS) around them.
- The reason why all the attacks are in English, even in a Japanese show is because Japanese
really love saying English words.
- Black Lady was changed to Wicked Lady for fear of lawsuits over it being racial (uncertain if
this is true but it sure is plausible).
- Kunzite was supposedly changed to Malachite to avoid legal issues with the copyright holder
of the word Kunzite.
- In the manga, Sailor Moon's hair was going to turn silver when she transformed, but the editor
said it should be yellow because it looks better on the cover because it's flashier.
- Haruka and Michiru were initially created to gain a more male audience.
- Lita was to come in in episode 17 and smoke to look like she was in a gang. In the episode,
"Jupiter Comes Thundering In" Lita was about to take a smoke when Serena showed up.
- When everyone entered High School in the Stars series, it's found out that that was a MAJOR
mistake. They were all meant to go into High School in the SuperS series like in the manga, but
the producers and script writers forgot and MAJORLY screwed up.
- Sailor Jupiter was originally to be 17 years old.
