Cardzillion Set Two Blue Edition

Information About this Set

These cards were available in Toys R Us Cardzillion vending machines and cost $0.25 a card. The machines were located right past the cash registers, but before the exit doors. Each card has one of six possible backs: Serena, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, or Sailor Venus (as well one that featured Raye). The information on the backs includes a description of whatever is on the front of the card and a little commentary bubble in which the chosen Sailor Moon character adds a personal comment. Unlike the first set, the character who appears on the back is random. The cards for this set were printed on thicker paper than the first but this time only gold embossed "Sailor Moon" logos were used.

Set two was not available as long as the other sets for an unknown reason. When they ran out, set one was distributed again before the set three cards were released. It is unknown if all the cards are loose in the box or if they are halved into two smaller unmarked boxes as I have heard about with other Cardzillion boxes from other TV Series'.

Some people have a problem with this set because of the "misinformation" on the back of some of the cards. Actually it is not misinformation, only the difference in the Japanese and American versions of the show. For example, card 77 basically admits the scouts died when fighting to get to Beryl, card 78 explicitly says Darien died, and card 79 says the Scout's "spirits" helped Sailor Moon fight Beryl. This information is true in the Japanese version of the show, but America censored it all out. The only truly odd thing about this set is the backs of cards 80-82. They feature a bar across the bottom that tells what episode the picture on the front came from. No other cards in this set or series feature this.

Variations and Misprints: This set, like many others and probably unintentionally, was released in two different color variations: one blue and one purple. This means that for every card that has blue on it, there is another card out there that has purple on it (instead of the blue and vise versa). Most of the time these variations are just mixed together and many people don't bother to sort them out. This is due to the fact that many don't care as the coloring difference is only in the blue and purple colors and that, on some of the cards, it can be very difficult to tell which variation it is (due to the fact that on some the only way to tell is by the small dot of color in between the "Sailor" and "Moon" of the logo). And if you really want to be technically and a purest there is really three different variations: blue, purple, and blue/purple. However most people ignore the last one and just consider them blue, even though they are darker then the blue variation.

Among the pictures below, there is a set of fronts and backs to show this color variation in the different forms it can appear on these cards. The scanner kind of messed with the colors just a bit and the set two color variations are not always as easy to see as the set one variations, so catching the differences in color may be difficult without having the card right in front of you. As before, the blue card is first and the purple card is second with the two images kept at a very large size so they can be examined closely. Unlike with the first set however, the color variation does not seem to apply to the special cards, ie. the foils (at trait that carries over into other sets with foil cards). The first card shows the color variation in the clothing, the second shows it in the background, and the third shows the variation only in the card's number. The fourth card, while it was chosen to show the variation only in the small "TM" trademark next to the logo, I picked one with the color variation throughout by mistake as I was only paying attention to that small spot. It still works for that purpose though so all is well. The backs of the cards also show slight color variations too.

Set Info Foil: 43-48
Regular: 49-84
Non-Card Info Box: 1-1
Vending Machine: 1-1
Chase Ratios All cards came out of the machine at random, however since there were less soft prisms to begin with, they were less likely to be won.
Size Foil: 2 ½" x 3 ½"
Regular: 2 ½" x 3 ½"
Box: Presumably 7 ¾" L x 3 ½" H x 2 ½" W
Vending machine: Unknown at this time
Release Info Released by Bandai in 1996.
Distribution Info Cards per Box: Presumably 500 with duplicates
Cards per Machine: Varies
Other Items were sold or obtained separately.
Card box states the back side of the cards should face upward when placed in the dispenser.
Best Storage All these cards fit perfectly well in standard protective sheets of 9 slots. The box will presumably fit in an 8 ½" x 11" one slot sheet, but as I don't own one I can't say for sure. The vending machine is too large for any protective method that I know, unless you cover it with a trash bag. The sheets are available at BCW Supplies.
