Minutes

Mama, Papa forgive me

The crumpled parchment of twenty drafts lay on the floor next to the old writing desk. One empty bottle of ink sat close to a second that was nearly drained. Several broken quills lay scattered around in an untidy fashion to match the rest of the room.

Out of sight, Out of mind
Out of time, To decide
Do we run?, Should I hide?
For the rest, Of My life

The woman at the desk crumpled up another piece of parchment and threw it at the wall. She watched it fall next to her over-stuffed backpack and sighed heavily. Frustration was affecting her letter, nothing seemed to come out the right way. She wasn't even sure there was one.

The more of us out there trying to stop this, the sooner it will all be over. You have to let us all help. I am taking the first step to open your eyes.

It's not just you that this affects. I almost lost them too. Had he not been there to help us, things would have turned out very different.

Don't blame him, this is my choice. I know you won't understand why and I can't seem to find the words to explain it, just please trust me.

If we don't do something than we'll all lose. You're needed here and he needs me. He may not want me there, but everyone needs help sometimes.

Another piece of parchment wasted, why was this so hard? Her feelings were so easy to understand and yet the words would not come. She grabbed another sheet of parchment and smoothed it out over the top of the writing desk. A noise upstairs froze her. They couldn't catch her. She needed to write faster, to make up her mind. She couldn't just leave a blank sheet on the desk.

Can we fly?, Do I stay?
We could lose, We could fail
In the moment, It takes
To make plans, Or Mistakes

He is out there right now on his own. What did you expect me to do?

I can make my own decisions now and I choose to help.

You're so important to me and I am going to help protect you.

This is a war and we are all on the front lines.

This wasn't working. She couldn't just leave them with one line. How could one line express anything? But it was all she had left. All the letters before had been long and eloquent and meaningless. She needed something else, something that didn't fool anyone.

Thirty minutes, a blink of an eye
Thirty minutes to alter our lives
Thirty minutes to make up my mind
Thirty minutes to finally decide
Thirty minutes to whisper your name
Thirty minutes to shoulder the blame
Thirty minutes of bliss, thirty lies
Thirty minutes to finally decide

Another sheet of parchment and another bottle of ink from the drawer. The movement upstairs came again and she almost dropped it. If they came down, if they caught her, it would be all over.

You taught me to stand up for what is right.

You can't protect me forever.

Someone has to help him.

I'll be ok, don't worry.

She again crumpled up the parchment and again cursed her mind for not thinking of the right words to leave them. She had to leave something, she had too. She couldn't just let them wonder, they had suffered enough.

Carousels, in the sky
That we shape, with our eyes
Under shade, silhouettes
Casting shade, Crying rain...

Yet with still nothing down on paper she was just wasting time, time that could be spent out there... with him. Her mind focused on how he was out there alone, doing it on his own. How could he be so selfish to think he was protecting her by leaving her here...

You just wouldn't understand.

My mind is made up, you can't stop me.

I'll do my best to keep in touch.

If I don't come back, know that I love you.

She couldn't leave that! She was already causing enough heartbreak. Besides, the idea of what could happen was only trying to stop her. The more she ignored it the faster she would get to him.

Can we fly? Do I stay?
We could lose, we could fail...
Either way
Options change, Chances fail
Trains derail

One last piece of parchment, this had to be the end. The sounds upstairs had become footsteps in the hall. Someone was up and she couldn't take the chance that they would find her, stop her. Too much was at stake.

I'll miss you, but I have to go.

I have to follow my heart.

I love him.

A light shone from the top of the stairs and she froze. It was too late. One last dip into the ink bottle and one last scratching across the page.

Thirty minutes, a blink of an eye
Thirty minutes to alter our lives
Thirty minutes to make up my mind
Thirty minutes to finally decide
Thirty minutes to whisper your name
Thirty minutes to shoulder the blame
Thirty minutes of bliss, thirty lies
Thirty minutes to finally decide

I'm sorry.

When the footsteps reached the bottom of the stairs all that remained was a mess of parchment and quills blowing in the breeze from the open door. The woman's one last piece of parchment lost in the wind...

To decide, to decide, to decide, to decide
to decide, to decide, to decide, to decide

"Ginny... is that you?" asked Mrs. Weasley.

To decide.
